Hookah Smoking...

Also known as Arghileh, Nargile, Shisha pipe and many more names. This device is used to smoke tobacco (called shisha or mossaal), by filtering the smoke down thru water and a hose. It can be traced back to origins in India. Originally used to smoke opium and other materials, down thru the ages it made a transformation into a tobacco pipe, where it is used in various cultures across the world today.

Hookah smoking is rapidly picking up popularity as a social activity among younger circles, especially colleges in North America, Canada and the UK. Many people believe various myths that hookah smoking is supposed to be better for your health than typically cigarette use, but in truth there are little to no scientific studies that can prove or disprove these myths. One thing to remember is that it still is smoking tobacco – a foreign substance. It’s not supposed to be in the body, so even if the method is different, it’s not “pure and healthy” as many myths state.

But used in moderation, it is an enjoyable past time that can be shared among friends. Due to it’s “old connotations”, many in the public see the device as something related to “drug use” – IT IS NOT! True Hookah Enthusiasts should education anybody who believes this and show them, if not offer them the opportunity to use one. The public view is changing, but the progress is slow and backbreaking, especially in this modern age where many places have new smoking bans and laws.

Various items of a Hookah

This picture shows some of the items that assemble into a full sized modern hookah. Going from left to right:
  • Base Jar
  • Stem (behind this is a coal bucket & tongs)
  • Ash tray
  • Coals

Types of Shisha

This picture shows some of the various brands of Shisha (flavored molasses tobacco) that you smoke out of the Hookah. There are many brands, ranging from the simple "starter" types like Al Waha and Al Amir, to the Premium High-end grades like Starbuzz, Tangier's, Rommans, and others.

Each person has to expriement with what flavors (ranging from fruits, spices, nuts and more) they like and what strength of tobacco they can handle. They also prduce a few brands of Herbal Shisha fo those who don't wish to smoke tobacco.

27" Red Syrain Hookah

This is but one of the three functional hookahs we have in the house, my 27" Red Syrian "Crimson Queen". She was piece-meal made from different places/parts. The stem came from a guy in CA, the base from Hooksh-shisha.com, the hose I modified from an old hose, the bowl was picked up locally. Her modified hose now has a red velet cover.

17" Modern Hookah

This is my newest hookah, 17" Purple Mini Junior Modern hookah called Opal. It was purchased from EBay at a killer price! She also kicks a heck of a punch, I was very happily surprised as the smoke she'll offer up! Due to her size, I purchased a small toolbox and she now has a carrying case for traveling!

More hookah parts

This picture shows some more pieces of a hookah. Starting bottom left, going counter-clockwise:
  • Tongs
  • Bowl
  • Mouthtips
  • Various grommets
  • Hose w/ cover
  • Windcover (silver item in background)

Various typs of coals

This picture shows some of the various types of coal you use for the hookah. Starting at the bottom left you have Japanese Silver coated tabs, Middle back is bulk lump coal (which can be natural, fingers, or coconut shell), Right bottom and Middle is Quicklights (Golden and 3 King brands - 33mm and 40mm sizes). Lump coal and Japan Tabs need sustained heat (stove, grill, burner) to light, where Quicklights only need the flame of a match or lighter to start. Make sure to "cook" the coals to a red-hot state, with a all-over coating of ash. This allows the chemicals inside (if they are there) to burn off.

Certain types of coal do better than others; you'll have to experiment with the different types and brands to find out what works best for you. Make sure you ALWAYS use Hookah (or incense) coals, NEVER use BBQ charcoal. That can lead to serious health issues or even death.

30" Green Syrian Hookah

This is my BF's 30" Froggie Hookah, so named for the Green color. It's also a piece-meal hookah; the stem came from the same person as I got mine. The hose is a washable replacement we bought with a hose cover I sowed. The bowl came from the same place I got mine and the base came from SocialSmoke.com.

Where the Hookah Live

This is were the hookahs live, when not in use. Just a simple wooden nightstand. All 4 (3 working) sit there, safe and out of the way, until next time. The large white toolbox at the bottom is the carrying case for Opal (Purple Hookah).
